Rye Rye Can

Meet my new friend Rye Rye.

Rye Rye is a dancing dynamo & rapper who is M.I.A's protegé. She is also a lover of glitter & false eyelashes, which basically means she had me at "Hello".

I did Rye Rye's neo-Cleopatra makeup on April 30th at the Paramount hotel, for MF & Interview mags. Later that evening she rocked Terminal 5 opening for The Gossip.

Emotion in Motion

Wahoo! Spring is finally here in NYC & there's nothing better than dusting off your bike to take a spin around the East Village. Brings me back a couple springs - to shooting this video for Dean & Britta's rendition of a Lee Hazelwood & Ann Margaret tune...

I have to say, am in love with Dean & Britta! They were an absolute dream to work with, as were idea-woman director Sera Rogacki and hair star Andre Gunn.

In addition to "You Turn My Head Around", Sera and Andre and I have done a handful of cool projects together. It takes a good team (plus much fun, flowing coffee & creativity, loads of talent, and excellent editing) to make righteous videos!

Here's another cool concept video for local dolls The Hong Kong. "Tongue Tied" is set to a Bonnie & Clyde story featuring Dean Wareham of - yep, you guess it! - Dean & Britta. The song and album were produced by Ric Ocasek.

SXSW Girls Rock Femme Fatale Lashes

Just back from a dizzying trip to the annual South by Southwest music festival in Austin TX. There was so much incredible music to take in, and a close second to the intoxicating sounds was the nonstop parade of mad style...

Amongst girl rock fans, I noticed a huge resurgence of the classic false lash.
Thank you, Nico, for paving the way.

Cool chicks at the Ray Davies show to BRMC to Spindrift to School of Seven Bells sets were rocking falsies, usually paired with a nice heavy bang. The effect is very "I-could-peer-in-and-pierce-your-soul-if-I-wanted-but-you-bore-me-so-I-won't-bother".
In a word: Beguiling.

The cool thing about rock chic is that it's also recession chic. It's economical both time-wise and $-wise to have a few choice products (waterproof liquid liner & mascara, plus lashes & Duo adhesive) that will amp up the volume on one feature and then you leave the rest of the face alone. 

...Of course it takes a certain devil-may-care air to plop a big fat lash on and walk out the door. If you got it you got it so just do it.

Victor de Souza goes far out for Fall 2o1o

The look at Victor de Souza's FW 2o1o show can perhaps be described as "otherworldly". From a makeup standpoint, we call it labor-intensive.

This was truly a team effort. In fact, the makeup team was divvied up into departments, for an assembly-line approach to GETTING IT DONE.

6:30 call time. No girls til 8am. Per usual.
Ran into my longtime friend, Shawn Mount, a rad hairstylist. We took a photo to show how enthused we were to be hanging out together at the crack of dawn in a large tent in frigid February.

Eventually, Shawn's wife, stunner Heidi Mount arrived. Lucky me, I got to do her makeup, which is never short on entertainment. We had some laughs, I made up her mug, and then she tweeted about me. Cute!

 

 I also had the pleasure of painting Vlada's face for the show. Here are Heidi & Vlada together in the line-up:
